On the move again

Well, here we are finally in Gran Canaria - though all certainly did not go to plan with our travels. We set off for the airport to fly to England, checked in and went to the boarding gate --- only to be told that all flights from La Palma were cancelled due to strong winds. Clearly the malevolent gods were not yet through with us.

Fortunately this is  common and we were able to get our money back easily and then re-book direct flights to the  UK the following Tuesday. We spent a lovely week with our family and were able to enjoy quality times with our rapidly growing and constantly smiling youngest family member

All too soon the week was over and we were back to La Palma. However, we did not remain long, leaving the next day for a 24 hour sail to Puerto Mogan, Gran Canaria, The sail was an uneventful mixture of sailing and motorin with winds changing strength and direction throughout the day and night, though Scruffbag was accompanied on the dawn watch by dolphins playing round the boat, glowing with the phosphorescence in the night sea. Of course they disappeared when I came on watch and I only saw a fleeting glimpse of one of them.

At around 10, we pulled into the marina at Puerto Mogan to be greeted by our German friends Bernie and Gerda, last seen by us in Porto Santo in September last year.

Puerto Morgan was once a small fishing village but is now an upmarket resort, albeit very charming.

It has been called "The Venice of Gran Canaria" ¬, though it only has 2 tiny canals so someone is being a bit fanciful I think. It also has far too many shops selling tourist goods and clothes etc. at very inflated prices compared to the other places we have visited. The same goes for the restaurants and cafes. Two coffees can cost over 5 euros here and we are used to paying less than 3 euros even in Santa Cruz and San Sebastian, both of which are island capitals.

That said, it is pretty and the boat dwellers in the marina are very friendly so we have been doing lots of socialising and plan on doing some walking and on getting to know the area.It is also a sun trap so the cockpit cover is up and the beach is beckoning.
